her parents moved to Haldimand Co., Ont., where she resided until her marriage with David Fretz,
of Lincoln County on August 30, 1859, and resided with him on the homestead near Jordan Ont.
To this union were born 3 sons and 4 daughters, all of whom survive their parents, their father
having died in 1878. A few years later the widow united in marriage with Andrew Kratz who
preceded her in death nearly twenty years. Sister Kratz was always active and earnest in her
Christian life, enjoying Christian associations and the service of the Church and Sunday school in
which she was active for many years. Her sympathetic spirit made her a minister to those who were
in need or in affliction. Her pleasant disposition and friendliness endeared her to all who knew her.
Her Christian experience was real and her life was devoted to her Savior whom she loved and
served and for whom she always had a faithful witness. Until the last few months of her life her
place was seldom vacant in the congregation and her voice was heard in the service of song. Her
frequently expressed desire to meet with Jesus, her Lord, whom she often saw in her dreams and
visions, was rewarded in the early morning hours of Jan. 12, 1922. She suffered for some time with
lingering cold, which terminated in pneumonia. Funeral services were held on Jan. 15. Services

was ordained to the ministry of the Mennonite Church on Nov. 1, 1885, by Bishop Gayman of
Cayuga during one of those periods when the church at the "Twenty" was torn asunder by strife.
Formal peace was again restored before the official break in 1889. Joseph sympathized with the
Gayman party. From the Canadian Fretz Descendants Newsletter - Volume 4-Issue 1, Number 7, pg.8: " Joseph was ordained to the ministry in the Moyer Mennonite Church, Vineland, on November
1, 1885. During 1889 a group who wanted to remain more conservative separated from the Moyer
congregation, and built their church building on Martin Rd., beside the north-west corner of the old
'Mennonite Burying Ground' stone wall. Minister Joseph and Mary Wismer went with minister
Abraham F. Rittenhouse and thirty-eight others to this more conservative division. ... After several years the membership in this congregation dwindled, until Joseph Wismer was
listed in the last six members. Caretaker A.D. Moyer relates how Joseph Wismer, last pastor of
this church, used to carry on services sometimes by himself, singing and praying. Joseph Wismer died in 1927, which caused this church to close. Mary died October 28, 1911,
three years before Moses F. Rittenhouse purchased the adjoining land for a community cemetery." Obituary of MARY FRETZ wife of REV. JOSEPH WISMER Taken from the Gospel Herald November 1911 Wismer. - Mary Fretz, the beloved wife of Preacher Joseph Wismer, passed away at their home

7:9-17. Dominion of Canada Province of Ontario County of Haldimand To Wit I Joseph High of the Township of Rainham South Cayuga in the County of Haldimand,
yeoman, do solemnly swear: 1. That I am the youngest son of David High late of the Township of Louth in the County of
Lincoln, yeoman deceased. 2. That my father, the said David High died at the Homestead being lot twenty-three in the
First concession of the said Township of Louth in the year One thousand eight hundred and
twenty-two. 3. That at the time of his death he was the owner of the said homestead lot. 4. That under his will he bequeathed the said homestead lot twenty-three in the first
concession in the Township of Louth unto my oldest brother, Abraham High, at a valuation to be
fixed by his Executor. 5. That my oldest brother, Abraham High, accepted such devises according to the terms of
my fathers will and resided on the same from my fathers death in the year 1822 to the time of his
own death in the year 1877. 6. That my oldest brother Abraham High duly made his last Will and Testament by which he
devised the said Homestead being part of lot twenty-two and twenty-three in the first concession
of Louth unto Abraham K. Honsberger who resided with him upon the same. 7. The children of David High were Anna High, Abraham High, David High, John High, and
Joseph High and they are all dead now but myself. 8. I was but three and a half years of age at the time of my father's death. 9. During the whole of my life time I never heard of anyone else claiming to have any interest
in the said homestead farm, other than my oldest brother, Abraham High and those claiming
through him, and I always understood that he had obeyed my father's wishes as set forth in his will
and had carried out the terms imposed upon him therein. 10. As near as I can remember my mother died in 1868. 11. I do not remember anything about the appraisement of the Homestead or whether the
Executors ever gave Abraham a deed as required by will. I was very young then, but I have no
doubt but that they did as the Homestead always was known as Abraham's among the rest of us. 12. And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true and
knowing that it is of the same force and effect as if made under oath and by virtue of the Canada
Evidence Act 1893. His Joseph X High Mark Declared before me at the township of Rainham in the County of Haldimand this 17th day of April in the year of our Lord 1902. R.A. Havill. J.P. Text, Eccl. 12:5. ii. SARAH E. (#13709) was born Louth Twp. Lincoln Co. ON 29 January 1869. 102. SARAH RITTENHOUSE7 HUNSBERGER (ANNA FRETZ6 RITTENHOUSE, DINAH5 FRETZ,
JOHANNES (JOHN)4, HANS (JOHN)3, JOHANNES2, JOHANNES1) (#203) was born in Bayham
Twp. Elgin Co. Ontario 15 December 1817. She married DAVID M. BEARSS 1 February 1838. (DAVID M. BEARSS is #1398.) DAVID
was born 01 March 1814. He married MARGARET HOUSER 1834. DAVID died 10 October 1889
in Elgin County, Ontario, Canada, at age 75. DAVID M. BEARSE was a carpenter by trade and he belonged to the Society of Friends in
Elgin County, Ontario, Canada. His first wife, MARGARET HOUSER died at childbirth on 10
September 1836, just 2 years after they had been married. It was their second child, but he died
10 days later on 20 September 1836. DAVID remarried in 1838 to SARAH RITTENHOUSE HUNSBERGER. SARAH RITTENHOUSE HUNSBERGER and DAVID M. BEARSS had the following
children: 293 i. SUSAN8 was born 09 May 1839 294 ii. BENJAMIN F. was born 08 February 1841 295 iii. MARY HUNSBERGER was born 05 July 1843 296 iv. MAHLON was born 20 July 1847 297 v. JOHANNES (JOHN)4, HANS (JOHN)3, JOHANNES2, JOHANNES1) (#33) was born in Bayham
Twp. Elgin Co. Ontario 21 September 1819. SUSAN died 10 October 1896 in Clinton Twp., Lincoln
Co., ON, at age 77. Her body was interred 13 October 1896 Old Mennonite Cem. (Moyer) Vin,
Ont.. She married DAVID GROBB 28 January 1844 in Clinton Twp., Lincoln Co., ON. (DAVID
GROBB is #32.) DAVID was born 09 December 1804 in Lot 7, Con 3, Clinton Twp., Lincoln Co..
DAVID was the son of ABRAHAM GROBB and ELIZABETH FRETZ. He married ELIZABETH
WISMER FRY 03 September 1828 in Clinton Twp., Lincoln Co., ON. DAVID died 03 March 1890
in Lot 3, Con 1, Clinton Twp.. Lincoln Co., at age 85. His body was interred 07 March 1890 Old
Mennonite Cem. (Moyer) Vin, Ont.. DAVID GROBB was born on 9 December 1804 in Clinton Township, Lincoln County, Ontario
in the district known as "The Twenty". The creeks were numbered starting at Niagara Falls and so
this creek was the Twenty Mile Creek. His father was ABRAHAM GROBB JR. and his mother was
ELIZABETH FRETZ. DAVID GROBB was a MENNONITE and a farmer as well as a blacksmith and wagonmaker
by trade. DAVID purchased 90 acres in Clinton Township, Lincoln County. It was the east half of Lot 3
Concession 1 including the Broken Front along Lake Ontario. The Bargain and Sale Instrument
was # 9806 Registered 31 July 1834. In my files are historic and modern maps showing the
location. Also in my file is a copy of the Land Abstract Ledger Sheet for this land. In 1994 this property is still being farmed, partly in fruit trees and the rest in grapes and
vegetables. Robert Martin and his sons are the present owners. His father purchased the land from
the executors of Susan Hunsberger Grobb's estate. Around the 1850s the rail lines were reaching the Bothwell area in Kent County not far from
Chatham, Ontario. They were offering land at bargain prices to attract settlers. DAVID GROBB
applied for Crown Lands and received the following. There are historic and modern maps in my
files showing the locations. 50 acres west 1/2 west side of Lot 2 Concession 6, Zone Township, Kent County, 26 February
1855. In 1994 it is still being farmed but no original buildings remain. 100 acres west 1/2 Lot 1 Concession 2, Zone Township, Kent County, 6 August 1862. It also is still
being farmed in 1994. 49 acres west side Lot "C" and 5 acres Lot 7 in the Gore, Zone Township, Kent County DAVID GROBB never lived on these properties and finally sold them all to Jacob Moyer for $
4160. Deed dated 31 December 1865 Recorded 6 January 1866. The interesting aspect of these
properties is that GEORGE AUGUSTUS SMITH from Smithville, Grimsby Township, purchased
land right beside DAVID GROBB'S land at the same time. It shows the families knew each other
which becomes significant later when George Smith's son JONAS married David Grobb's daughter
ORPHA. The house that DAVID GROBB built on the shore of Lake Ontario near Vineland was much
enlarged later by MOSES RITTENHOUSE. However in 1994 the original part of the house is still
in excellent shape and extends back from the newer part. It is owned in 1994 by Robert Martin's
brother and in my files are photographs. This is the house where my grandmother ORPHA GROBB
SMITH lived while growing up. In my file is a somewhat unusual deed. David Grobb and his wife Susan Hunsberger sold the
property to their son Sylvester for $ 4500 on 2 August 1884. Then they took back a mortgage with
a "lifetime" lease for $ 200 annually which was to be applied to the mortgage until the death of
David and Susan. I was never able to locate a will for David Grobb. DAVID GROBB died on 3 March 1890 but
SUSAN HUNSBERGER, David's second wife, lived until 10 October 1896. She left a will which
ordered the executors to sell the property in Clinton Township and divide the proceeds between
her daughters and other stipulations for her sons. This solves the mystery of why there was no will
for David Grobb. Susan's will was made out in 1888 when David was still alive. However it shows
all the property was already in her name, for some reason. So when David died there was no
reason for a will of his own. How the property was in Susan's name at the time she made her will
in 1888, is still a mystery. David and Susan had deeded the property to their son Sylvester in 1884.
Maybe only part of the property was included in this deed. DAVID GROBB, his first wife ELIZABETH FRY and his second wife SUSAN HUNSBERGER
are buried in the old section of the Mennonite Cemetery in Vineland which is enclosed by a stone
wall. In my files are photographs taken in 1994 of their tombstone (plot V 4) and the graveyard. Obituary of DAVID GROBB Taken from the Herald of Truth April 1890 GROBB.-On the 3d of March 1890, on the Lake Shore, Lincoln County, Ontario, David Grobb,

some days. She was born in Bayham Township, and when about 24 years old she came to Lincoln
County, Clinton Township, Ontario, and took charge of the family of small children of David Grobb,
widower, and afterwards was married to him. To this union were born two sons and three
daughters, of whom one son and two daughters survive her. One son and one daughter of the first
marriage survive her. Her husband preceded her to the spirit world about six years ago. She was
a very kind mother and neighbour and a devoted Christian and Bible reader. She was buried at the
Moyer Church on the 13th, where a large number of relations and friends assembled to pay the last
tribute of respect to a friend to all. Peace to her ashes." This obituary is particularly of interest as it discloses how Susan Hunsberger met David Grobb

Vineland, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Steward, on Monday, Aug. 7, 1933; aged 95
y. 3 d. She was the last of the family of Abraham Kratz, for many years deacon of the Moyer
Church at the "Twenty." Born Aug. 4, 1838, she was the oldest resident of the district, having
resided near her birthplace during her lifetime. She was first united in marriage to Jacob F.
Rittenhouse and resided on the farm near Campden. He died in 1894. Three sons and two
daughters were born to them, of whom Mrs. Steward of Vineland and Moses Rittenhouse of British
Honduras survive her. She was married the second time, in 1909, to Christian H. Moyer, who
predeceased her. For many years she was a member of the Mennonite Church and was deeply
interested in the Church and in Christian work. One of her last requests was that at her funeral
services the minister should not preach about her, but preach to the young people that they should
turn from the sins of life and live close to the Lord. She has left behind her a full quota of years and
a blessed hope for the life to come. Services were held Aug. 9. Her remains were laid by the side
of her first husband in the cemetery near Campden. Services conducted by S. F. Coffman. Text,

wife of Pre. John F. Rittenhouse, aged 63 years, 29 days. Her illness was of about five years
duration, with cold tubular bone abscesses on the hip. She suffered a great deal at times, but bore
her afflictions patiently, being fully resigned to the will of the Lord, and willing to depart whenever
the messenger of death would come, having the living hope of a bright hereafter. The funeral was
held on the 24th; she was buried at Moyer's meeting house, where notwithstanding the
unpleasantness of the weather and bad roads, a large number of relatives and friends met to pay
the last tribute of love and respect to a near and dear one. She leaves a sorrowing husband, two
sons and four daughters to mourn their loss. Seven children preceded her to the eternal world.
Funeral services were conducted by Noah Stauffer assisted by Gilbert Bearss. REV. JOHN FUNK RITTENHOUSE in 1885 was Ordained as Deacon of the Mennonite Church
Then in the spring of 1889, he was Ordained as minister at the Moyer's Church. Obituary of REV. JOHN FUNK RITTENHOUSE From Herald of Truth November 1903 Pre. John F. Rittenhouse On the 4th of November, 1903, in the hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., from the
effects of a surgical operation, Bro. John F. Rittenhouse of Jordan, Lincoln Co., Ont., aged 67 Y.,
8 M., 24 D. He is a descendent of the well-known Rittenhouse family of Germantown, Pa., which
was among the first Mennonite settlers in America, William Rittinghuysen having, in 1690, built on
a branch of the Wissahickon Creek the first paper mill in the American colonies. On the maternal
side he is a descendant of the Funk family, his mother being a sister to Jacob Funk, father of J.F.
and A .K. Funk of the Mennonite Publishing House. He was born Feb, 10, 1836, on the farm, the
old homestead, on which he spent his entire life. He was married to Elizabeth Honsberger, who
died Dec. 21, 1899. He is survived by two sons and four daughters, also by four brothers, viz: Pre.
Abraham of Ontario, George of Manitoba, M.F. and Dr. William of Chicago, Ill. He also leaves a
large circle of friends and relatives, both in Canada and the United States. He has been connected
with the work of the church at this place for a long time, first as deacon and later as minister. He
was widely known in this vicinity as well as in other parts of the country, especially in eastern
Pennsylvania, which was the home of his forefathers and, as a matter of course, of a large number
of his relatives. Having a daughter married there, Mrs. Joseph Wismer, he frequently visited in
those parts. His death will, no doubt, be a surprise to his many friends. His affliction was of such
a nature that it did not hinder him much from attending to the duties of life, but finally necessitated
a surgical operation, which caused his sudden death. During his stay at the hospital he was
attended by his youngest daughter, who is a professional nurse. His remaining children, two sons
and four daughters, reside in the vicinity of his home. May God bless and comfort all in their
bereavement. The funeral was held in the Moyer meeting-house, on the 7th of November, and was
largely attended. The services were conducted by the brethren Gilbert Bearss and Noah Stauffer
from Luke 2:29. "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word." JOHN FUNK RITTENHOUSE REV. and ELIZABETH (BETSY) HONSBERGER had the

(CHRISTINA KIENZLE is #8579.) CHRISTINA was born 9 October 1842 in Tuttlingen, Germany.
CHRISTINA was the daughter of JOHN LUDWIG KIENZLE and MARY BARBARA HUBER.
CHRISTINA died 12 February 1931 at age 88. Her body was interred after 12 February 1931 in
Reesor Cem. Con 10, Markham Twsp. ABRAHAM F. RITTENHOUSE was born on his father's farm in Vineland at the corner of John
Street and Martin Road. In 2003 it is owned by R. S. Short and Sons. After he married CHRISTINA
KIENZLE in 1863 they farmed on the next lot north of his father's farm. In 1871 he was ordained
a Minister of the Moyer (First Mennonite )Church in Vineland. CHRISTINA KIENZLE emigrated to Canda with her family in 1853 when she was 11 years old.
At first the family settled near Dunnville, Ontario but when she was 12 years old, CHRISTINA went
to work in Vineland on the farm of Samuel H. Moyer. As was the Mennonite custom at the time she
was virtually adopted into the family as there were no other girls to help the mother. When CHRISTINA married Abraham F. Rittenhouse she was even given some dower rights
among which was the choice of the best cow in the stable, a prize Jersey called "Gentle". It is
thought the bible described below might have been part of her dower. In 1889 Rev. Abraham Rrittenhouse led a split in the church as he thought his Old Order group
was becoming too progressive and modern. Along with Rev. Joseph Wismer and Deacon Abram
Culp he led a group of 41 individuals to form a separate Mennonite Church known as the Wismer
Group. They built a new Meeting House near the corner of Highway #8 and Martin Road.
Abraham's older brother, Rev. John F. Rittenhouse took over as pastor of the original church. In 1913 Rev. Abraham Rittenhouse and Christina sold their Vineland farm and retired to the
Markham area where 6 of their 11 children were already living. They retained their Old Order
Mennonite beliefs. They are both buried in the Reesor Church Cemetery on concession 10 in
Markham. The Family Bible of REVEREND ABRAHAM F. RITTENHOUSE and his wife CHRISTINA
KIENZLE has been donated to the Museum of the Twenty at Jordan, Ontario for safekeeping. It
was inherited by Murray and Bernard Reesor from their mother Annie Rittenhouse Reesor and
grandfather Aaron Rittenhouse. The Bible was printed in Reutlinger, Germany in 1854. This city is about 50 miles north of
Tuttlingen where CHRISTINA KEITZLE was born. This version of the Bible was translated by Dr.
Martin Luther and contained a concordance and also a Family Register which revealed a great
many family details. Obituary of REV. ABRAHAM FUNK RITTENHOUSE From Gospel of Truth October 1918 Rittenhouse.--Abraham F. Rittenhouse was born in Lincoln Co., Ont., and died at his home at

s/o John Rittenhouse and Elizabeth, on 26 December 1865 at South Cayuga to MARY
HUNSBERGER, 23 of South Cayuga, d/o John Hunsberger and Elizabeth by Rev. W. M.
Campbell, Wesleyan Minister at Dunnville. Witnesses Christopher Rittenhouse and Elizabeth
Rittenhouse. Shown in the Marriage Register of Rev. Campbell, and found in the Haldimand
County Marriages 1858-1869 Volume 15. The following account was written by SHIRLEY TULLOCH of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada,
and I owe her many thanks for allowing me to reproduce it here. George Rittenhouse (l843 -1921), ninth child of John and Elizabeth Rittenhouse, was brought
up on the family farm and became a farmer in his own right and in due course, marrying Mary
Honsberger, of another Mennonite family which had moved to Canada about 1799. He was like most men of his time: engaging in farming. In those days, one could speculate as
to whether this was by inclination or necessity. When George came west later with his family, he
was not well off financially. Perhaps he thought of the move as a new start. And five of his children
had made the move west. Available information about his early life prior to this is very limited. George and Mary Honsberger had been married on December 26, 1865. Then in 1874, a few
years after the rather premature death of his father-in-law, John Honsberger, at age 54, in 1867,
he and Mary moved to farm with John's widow on the Honsberger farm. They lived in the home
there that was built in 1849. This house was still standing in 1975 at the time of our visit to the area.
George and Mary had six children.. John Emerson (l 867-1919), Franklin(l 869-1942), Allen
(l 972-1954), Elizabeth (l 874-1927), Sarah (l 875-196 1), and Rosetta (1879-1937). The couple
followed the move of their children to Rossendale, Manitoba, and George bought the north west
quarter of 21-9-1 0 in 1899. This was CPR land and according to the railroad land title records, the
price was $3.00 per acre. In February, 1903, he sold to Matthew Vennard who farmed in the
Arbroath district not far south of the Assiniboine River. George's land was to the north of the river
that divided that part of the country. No doubt much of the motivation of the move west was to be
in closer proximity with the majority of their family. And Mary's health was declining. She had
developed a goiter and heart problems. In 1902, she died from heart failure at the age of 60. She
was buried in South Rossendale Cemetery about ten miles north of Treheme. Her grandson,
Murray Johnson, was later buried beside her, as well as her son, Allen. After her death, an auction sale was held to dispose of their household effects, and, at that
sale, both my grandfather, Herb Matchett, and their son, Frank Rittenhouse, bid on one piece of
furniture - a chest of drawers which had long belonged in the family. Both men thought it should
remain in family hands. As my grandfather had children and he didn't, Frank withdrew from the
bidding and Herb purchased the chest. It was made of cherry wood with the top two drawers joined
to pull out and
